Lenzing™ Fibres
TENCEL™ and ECOVERO™ are man-made fibres from Lenzing – produced from renewable wood in a closed-loop, resource-efficient process. Sustainable not because the label says so, but because it can be proven.
Definition & Background
What are Lenzing™ fibres?
Lenzing AG is an Austrian company headquartered in Lenzing, Upper Austria, and is regarded as the global market leader in sustainable cellulosic fibres. Lenzing produces fibres from renewable raw materials – primarily wood from sustainably managed forests – and specialises in developing man-made fibres with an outstanding environmental footprint.
The best-known Lenzing brands in the textile sector are TENCEL™ (Lyocell and Modal) and ECOVERO™ (viscose). These fibres stand out for their excellent wearing properties – they are soft, breathable, moisture-regulating and biodegradable. At the same time, they are produced in processes that consume significantly less water and energy than conventional alternatives.
As man-made fibres, Lenzing products are structurally ineligible for GOTS – regardless of how sustainably they are produced. Lenzing has therefore developed its own certification programmes that independently verify and document the origin of the wood raw materials, the production processes and the environmental impact.
At fabrilogy™ we label all fabrics made from Lenzing fibres with our own eco. label – as a clear indication that while these fabrics are not GOTS-eligible, they carry a demonstrably good environmental footprint and have been deliberately selected by us.
"Lenzing demonstrates that man-made fibres and sustainability need not be a contradiction – when raw material, process and transparency are right."

The fibres in detail
TENCEL™ and ECOVERO™ at a glance
Lenzing produces several fibre lines with different properties and applications. These are the ones you will find at fabrilogy™:
TENCEL™ Lyocell
Produced from wood cellulose in a closed-loop solvent process (Lyocell process) with a solvent recovery rate of over 99 %. Exceptionally strong, soft and biodegradable. Ideal for fluid fabrics and home textiles.
Lyocell process
TENCEL™ Modal
Fibre sourced from Austrian beechwood, produced using the Modal process. Exceptionally soft, up to ten times more water-efficient than cotton, and particularly gentle on the skin. Widely used for underwear and babywear.
Modal process
ECOVERO™ Viscose
Viscose fibre from sustainably managed wood sources with a CO₂ footprint up to 50 % lower and significantly reduced water consumption compared to generic viscose. Soft, fluid and easy to dye.
Sustainable viscose
TENCEL™ × Refibra™
Lyocell fibre incorporating up to 30 % recycled cotton waste from textile production. Combines the benefits of TENCEL™ with a circular economy approach – less virgin raw material, same quality.
Circular economy
Biodegradability
All TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibres are biodegradable under industrial and home composting conditions, as well as in marine environments – certified by TÜV Austria.
TÜV Austria certified
Wood Raw Material & FSC®
Lenzing sources wood exclusively from sustainably managed forests – predominantly FSC®- or PEFC-certified. The raw material is fully traceable and independently verified.
FSC® / PEFC
How the fibre is made
The closed-loop process
The Lyocell process used to produce TENCEL™ is the benchmark for sustainable man-made fibre production – because it conserves resources and minimises waste:
01
Timber Harvest
Wood from FSC®-certified forests – predominantly beech and eucalyptus. No overexploitation, no clearing of primary forests.
02
Pulp Production
The wood is processed into pulp. By-products such as lignin are recovered as energy – no waste goes unused.
03
Fibre Spinning
The pulp is spun into fibres using a closed-loop solvent process (NMMO). Over 99 % of the solvent is recovered and reused.
04
Finished Fibre
The fibre leaves the plant without hazardous residues. It is biodegradable and meets the requirements of leading independent testing institutes.
Why we choose Lenzing
Lenzing™ at fabrilogy™
Lenzing fibres are our consistent answer to the question: how can a fabric be soft, functional and sustainable at the same time – even when it is not a natural product in the traditional sense?
01
Transparent Origin
Lenzing publishes raw material sources, production data and environmental metrics. We can show you where the fibre comes from – not just claim it.
02
Better Environmental Footprint
TENCEL™ and ECOVERO™ consume significantly less water and energy than cotton or conventional viscose – independently verified.
03
Superior Wearing Properties
Soft, breathable, moisture-regulating, antistatic – Lenzing fibres impress not only through their environmental credentials but also in direct skin contact.
04
Our eco. label
Since Lenzing fibres are ineligible for GOTS as man-made fibres, all corresponding fabrics carry our eco. label – an honest reference to their environmental footprint.
