What is GOTS?
The Global Organic Textile Standard is the world's leading standard for organic textiles – from raw fibre to finished fabric. Nearly all of our organic fabrics are GOTS certified.
Definition & Background
What is the Global Organic Textile Standard?
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and is the internationally recognised norm for processing textiles made from organically produced natural fibres. Introduced in 2006, it is jointly maintained by four leading organisations: the International Association of Natural Textile Industry (IVN), the Organic Trade Association (OTA), the Soil Association, and the Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA).
GOTS covers the entire textile processing chain – from the raw material through spinning, weaving and dyeing to the finished fabric. Every stage of processing must be independently audited and certified. This is what creates the unbroken traceability that sets GOTS apart from other standards.
To carry the GOTS label, a textile must contain at least 70 % organically certified natural fibres. For the "organic" label the threshold is 95 %. In addition to raw material requirements, GOTS also evaluates chemical inputs during processing, wastewater treatment, packaging, and social criteria throughout the entire supply chain.
GOTS applies exclusively to natural fibres such as organic cotton, organic wool or organic linen. Man-made fibres such as TENCEL™ or viscose are structurally ineligible for GOTS – regardless of how sustainably they are produced. For these fibres we have developed our own eco. label.
"GOTS creates confidence through unbroken control – from the cotton plant to the finished fabric on your roll."

What GOTS audits
The requirements at a glance
GOTS is more than proof of raw material origin. The standard encompasses ecological and social criteria across the entire processing chain:
Organic Raw Material
At least 70 % of the fibres must come from certified organic farming – without synthetic pesticides or genetically modified organisms. For the "organic" label the requirement is 95 %.
Mandatory
Chemicals in Processing
Dyes and finishing agents must meet strict toxicity and biodegradability requirements. Harmful substances such as formaldehyde, heavy metals and chlorine bleach are prohibited.
Mandatory
Wastewater Treatment
All processing facilities must operate a functional wastewater treatment system. Discharge limits for pH, temperature and pollutants are defined and regularly audited.
Mandatory
Social Standards
Binding social criteria apply throughout the entire supply chain: no child or forced labour, fair wages, safe working conditions, and the right to freedom of association.
Mandatory
Packaging & Transport
Packaging materials are also evaluated: PVC films are prohibited and materials should be recyclable or biodegradable. Cardboard must be recycled or FSC certified.
Additional criterion
Independent Auditing
Every link in the supply chain is audited annually by an accredited, independent certification body. Only companies holding a valid certificate may use the GOTS label.
External audit
From fibre to fabric
The GOTS supply chain at fabrilogy™
For a fabric to carry the GOTS label at fabrilogy™, every stage of its production must be certified and fully traceable:
01
Cultivation
Organic cotton from certified organic farming – no synthetic pesticides, no genetic modification, certified seed only.
02
Spinning & Weaving
Processing in GOTS-certified spinning mills and weaving facilities. No blending with conventional fibres permitted.
03
Dyeing & Finishing
Only GOTS-approved dyes and auxiliaries. Compliant wastewater treatment is mandatory at every processing stage.
04
Trade & Storage
fabrilogy™ is itself GOTS certified. Only this allows us to sell GOTS fabric and pass the label on to our customers.
What GOTS means for you
Why GOTS at fabrilogy™?
GOTS is the standard we trust most – because it audits without gaps, is independently verified, and makes no compromises on raw material, processing or social responsibility.
01
Full Traceability
Every GOTS fabric is traceable from the cotton plant to the roll in our warehouse. No gaps, no exceptions.
02
Tested for Harmful Substances
GOTS specifies which chemicals may be used during processing. This protects people and the environment – particularly important for babywear and skin-contact textiles.
03
Social Responsibility
GOTS audits not only ecological but also social criteria. Fair wages and safe working conditions are part of the standard – throughout the entire supply chain.
04
